Outrageous DifficultyĪs long-time fans of the Dark Souls series might know, these games are not for everyone. Still, despite the basic look, King's Field conveys its world in a believable manner that should be more than serviceable enough for most players. However, the game suffers from being an early 3D title, and that's clear to see in the basic models and the lackluster level geometry. Much like The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, King's Field loves to put players in maze-like dungeons that can be rather challenging to explore.
Not only did King's Field introduce a new perspective into the genre by bringing RPGs to the 3D realm, but it also did something that very few titles attempted in the genre: it put the player in a first-person view 3D environment. However, while those games always felt "tough but fair," King's Field throws any pretension of fairness out of the window, resulting in a highly frustrating experience that only die-hard Miyazaki fans might enjoy. Most people who have become fans, played through their initial frustration and learned to savor the quest to thrive in a decidedly hostile world, cut off from all support, where you must utilize everything available to you, just to survive. Items and NPCs are few and far between, but every one of them is hard earned and of great value to your character. Strangely, these are some of the very things that appeal to King’s Field fans. Critics cite reasons such as slow character movement, hard game play- rife with ways to die, and minimal NPC interaction. The whole King’s Field series is one of those game franchises that people seem to either love or hate. King’s Field is a 3D, first person RPG similar to the Elder Scrolls series, but unlike the massive overwhelming worlds of an Elder Scrolls game, King’s Field focuses on exploring and mastering a few areas.
